Monthly greetings from Finland: February 2004
Hello!
We are two 8th graders from Hakkala School and we will tell
you about Netlibris.
Netlibris is a literature circle which works on the Internet.
It includes pupils from all around Finland, for example from
our school, Hämeenlinna and Helsinki. Not all the schools talk
in the same group or about the same books but schools are
divided into smaller groups. Every month we read books with
different themes, for example juvenile literature, thrillers
or fantasy stories. School groups choose the themes themselves
and teachers make lists of books with help from pupils. From
these lists pupils choose books that they want to read.
Sometimes we write a reading diary when we are reading a book.
In the diary we describe our opinions and thoughts about the
characters, happenings and everything in the book. We usually
get a month to read the book, then also the slowest readers
have enough time to read their books. After reading we talk
about our books on the Net with other pupils who have read the
same book. Talks on the Net start after the end of the reading
period and the place where we talk is a special literature
forum which outsiders can’t enter. At the forum we have to use
correct language and defend our opinions.
Netlibris is not only talking on the Net. Sometimes we have
meetings where pupils from the same school group meet in the
spirit of literature. Netlibris-pupils from our school have
taken part in two meetings. The first one was here at Hakkala
School and the other in Hämeenlinna. Here in Lammi we visited
the library and played some make-friends games. In Hämeenlinna
we watched a play in a familiar ”cellar-theatre” and made
poems in groups.
And what is our personal opinion about Netlibris? We think it
is a nice change from the normal Finnish lessons and we have
read many books because of Netlibris. We also think more of
the things that we have read about when we write a reading
diary. And the meetings are great fun. We have met many
interesting people at them.
With best regards, Ida and Paula, class 8E.
